The Federal Commander

Edward H. Hobson was placed in charge of the Provisional Division and tasked to chase down Morgan and his command. He was captured by Morgan in 1864 in an ironic turn of events.

Morgan and his men went across Meigs County until they encountered Union forces in Portland, Ohio. The Battle of Buffington Island is Ohio's largest Civil War battlefield.

Each year a memorial service is held at the battlefield park in Portland. The Ohio History Connection and the Sons of Union Veterans lead the service.

Leading the approaching Federals along what is now Ohio 124 was Henry M. Judah, a rather unsuccessful commander during the Civil War.

Colonel Basil Duke

Colonel Basil Duke

Duke was Morgan's right-hand man as well as brother-in-law, and commanded one of the two Confederate brigades in Morgan's command.

Adam "Stovepipe" Johnson, who led the raid into Newburgh, Indiana in 1862, was an effective partisan leader, but is often overlooked during the Great Raid.

William McKinley was in the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry which was on the (West) Virginia side of the river and helped to capture some of Morgan's command

A Second Future President

Colonel Rutherford B. Hayes was the commanding officer of the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was in charge of the immediate forces on the (West) Virginia shore.
