The Battle of Buffington Island, fought on July 19, 1863, was the most significant engagement in what is officially called Morgan’s Indiana-Ohio Raid.  It is also the largest Civil War battle fought in the Eastern Midwest states of the United States.  Two future U.S. Presidents, Rutherford B. Hayes and William McKinley, Jr., were on the field of battle.  The battle was not fought on the island in the Ohio River, but rather on the 1,230 acres of bottomland surrounding the village of Portland.
